Roman River Music produces an annual festival along the idyllic Roman River Valley in coastal Essex, and runs a series of in-school music days in Colchester's most deprived areas.

I was quite simply blown away by everything my class achieved on Tuesday. It was a joy to watch and the whole school loved the performance.

'Many congratulations on a truly wonderful festival and thank you for bringing such superb entertainment to our doorstep. I thoroughly enjoyed every night and it was obvious that I was not the only one who felt that way.'

The festival is programmed by Artistic Director Orlando Jopling and invites top classical, jazz and folk musicians to give concerts in the fantastic acoustics of atmospheric and ancient churches.

Just to say thank you very much for a wonderful and beautifully organised festival weekend.

You have set up a remarkable festival. It was the first time I have been to Abberton church or to its delightful site, or inside the one at East Mersea - a lovely, light-filled place.

Our venues are intimate. Popular performances regularly sell out, so we would encourage you to email us to join our mailing list.

A real treat - we both hope there will be many more.

The Roman River valley is close to Colchester in Essex and within two hours drive from London, UK.

We hold music days at schools in areas of regeneration within the Colchester area, where musical experience is limited. Music days open up an undiscovered world to children who would otherwise be excluded. They are accessible to all children regardless of economic background.

Using some of opera and music theatre’s greatest moments as a starting point, participants learn arias and ensemble music, as well as composing their own original songs.

Roman River Music is able to run this outreach project thanks to the generosity of our Members and to the fantastic support of funding bodies.

The Roman River Valley is 15 minutes drive from Colchester in North Essex. It is less than an hour from Ipswich, and less than two hours from Cambridge and London.

Orlando Jopling - Artistic Director

Orlando

Orlando Jopling studied 'cello with William Pleeth, Alexander Baillie and Raphael Wallfisch. He plays with several of the London orchestras and chamber groups, and has given recitals all over Europe and America.

He also regularly conducts the English Chamber Orchestra both in the recording studio and on the concert platform, and has also conducted the London Mozart Players, Irish Chamber Orchestra and Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

He has performed with Sinéad O'Connor, working with her on a version for orchestra of her latest album, and he has assisted André Previn working with the LSO, and Sir Colin Davis. His music for TV has been heard on all the major UK channels.

Roman River Festival presents world-class musicians in beautiful and charismatic venues. Each year our brochure is seen by over 5,000 people, our website gets over 4,000 hits and our festival programme book is studied by over 1,000 festival-goers. If you would like your company to be associated with this kind of quality, please get in touch about sponsorship and advertising opportunities.

Although we receive recognition and support from local funding bodies, we are dependent on the steady support of our friends and benefactors to continue our music days project, the only one of its kind in the area, and bringing outstanding musicians to our lovely corner of Essex. Roman River Music is registered charity no. 1126395.

Each year we send out a newsletter in February and the brochure at the end of June. We will not trouble you further and nor will we give your details to anyone else.
